KOTA BARU, Jan 31 — PAS agrees with the federal government’s proposal to introduce a law to curb the spread of fake news that could threaten political stability, as well as undermine public order.

Its vice-president, Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah, regarded the move as apt and timely considering the wide dissemination of fake news currently, especially through the social media.

"Islam, itself, emphasises true information, but most of the social media published information that is not true, confuses the people and creates negative perception in the society,” he told reporters after the state executive council meeting at the Kota Darul NaimComplex here today.

Last Sunday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the government would consider introducing new legislation to curb the spread of fake news, following similar moves by several other countries.

On the move by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to introduce a special Corruption-Free Pledge (IBR)  for the 14th general election, Mohd Amar said PAS would take on a "wait and see’” stand.

"In PAS, we already have that, which is the ‘baiah’ that is decided by the party and approved by the Syura Council,” he said.

On the circulation of the list of PAS candidates to contest for parliamentary and state seats in Kelantan  yesterday, Mohd Amar said the final list had yet to be decided.

"We submitted three candidates for each seat, but the final decision has yet to be made. It will only be known on nomination day,” he added. — Bernama
