PETALING JAYA, Jan 24 — Several commuters found themselves submerged in knee-high flood waters after heavy rain caused a traffic standstill at the Persiaran Surian intersection near Mutiara Damansara here today.
Petaling Jaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zani Che Din said the waters have receded and six vehicles sustained damage after they were trapped in rising flood waters.
Mohd Zani said the vehicles however did not obstruct traffic and the situation was under control with the assistance of the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department.
The latter’s operations management chief Alimaddia Bukri said the department responded to a flash flood report at the location at 4.34pm.
Alimaddia said there were no casualties reported and personnel on the scene were monitoring the situation that has caused a seven kilometre traffic congestion after several stretch of roads became impassable.
Stranded motorists began circulating pictures on social media depicting the inundated roads and stationary vehicles.
Photos shared online showed several cars stuck at the T-junction as well as motorists exiting their vehicle with umbrellas in hand to wait out the flood.
Facebook user Skidz Chai posted a picture of the location with an accompanying caption, "Persiaran Surian become Sungai Surian, lucky taking MRT home.”
Another user, Uma Krishna in a comment said the sight looked terrible when she was taking the MRT.
