IPOH, Jan 16 — A 31-year-policeman suspected of being involved in a gang-robbery here last month was arrested after he surrendered to his colleagues today.

The policeman from Manjoi, Ipoh, turned himself in at the Ipoh police station at around 11am.

Ipoh police chief ACP Mohd Ali Tamby confirmed the arrest, and said they will apply to remand him further tomorrow.

"At the moment, he (the policeman) is being detained at the Ipoh central police station. We are still looking for another civilian suspect linked to the incident,” he said via text message today.

The policeman is believed to be part of a six-man group that robbed a Kampung Rapat family of around RM12,300 in cash on Dec 27.

Police have already arrested a civilian and three other policemen — including an inspector and two lance-corporals — over the same case.

All four were subsequently released on police bail.

According to investigations, the group is believed to have approached the victim’s home in Taman Lapangan Permai, Kampung Rapat and identified themselves as police officers.

They then climbed the walls of the home, entered it, and ransacked the items inside in the presence of the victim and this two children.

According to previous reports, police believe that the suspects would pass off their activities as narcotics raids.

They would tell the victims that substances believed to be drugs were found in the house before extorting money from them.
