IPOH, Jan 10 — Only one prawn cracker supplier in the state misused the halal logo, the Perak Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry (KPDNKK) said today.

Its chief enforcement officer Shamsul Nizam Khalil said the department had conducted checks on 65 premises at R&R areas in addition to other locations in the state.

"There are six suppliers who supplied their products to these premises and a check found their halal certifications were in order,” he said.

Speaking to reporters at the department here today, Shamsul added that the supplier who misused his halal logo had pulled all his stock from the market.

"Our investigations into the matter are still ongoing,” he added.

He reminded businesses that they are not allowed to put halal stickers on their products without obtaining the necessary approval from the relevant authorities.

"Halal certification can only be obtained from the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) or the respective state Religious Departments,” he added.

On January 4, the department seized 396 packets of prawn crackers found to have misused the halal logo from a 58-year-old businessman at a house in Lawan Kuda, Gopeng.

The raid was conducted following complaints by the public.

Initial investigations confirmed that the owner did not apply for halal certification for the prawn crackers.

During the raid, the department confiscated 1,600 plastic bags with the halal wording that were used for the prawn crackers.

It is understood that the seized prawn crackers were meant for distribution in rest areas between Tapah and Tanjung Malim.
