KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 30 — For many families in places like Pasir Mas in Kelantan, where floods have become part and parcel of their lives, the devastation they experience at least once a year during the monsoon season is something they will never get used to.

As this year’s flood devastation widens in the east coast state, those affected spoke to Malay Mail of being displaced and how their lives had once again been disrupted.

Clerk Mehammad Roslan Ahmad, 46, said he and his parents had to move to his sister’s home as his house in Kampung Seberang Merbau had been submerged to chest level on Tuesday.

"My sister lives around the same area but her house is not badly flooded yet.

"On Tuesday, many of us had to leave our vehicles on the main road as we could not enter our village due to the worsening floods,” he said.

He added he was worried about the damage to his house and would likely need to spend a lot of money on repairs.

Teacher Mohd Salahudin Mat Jusoh, 33, said he was back in his home town as he was supposed to tie the knot this weekend.

However, his wedding reception on Sunday is likely to be cancelled.

"Everything had been planned out and paid for but we may have to postpone the event. We had invited about 1,000 people,” said Mohd Salahudin.

Meanwhile, sundry shop owner Zuri Othman, 44, said he was prepared and had stocked up on essentials.

Business is as usual despite knee-deep water in his shop and house next door.

"The water in my shop and home has risen since Tuesday. Luckily, none of the goods at my store are affected as I keep the supplies on higher ground,” said the resident of Kampung Djawi.

Mohd Noor Azmi Mohd Noor, 35, whose parents also live in Kampung Djawi, said the floods were a normal occurrence for his family.

"Usually my parents would not need to move out from their home and we hope we won’t have to this year. But the damage is something we can’t avoid. My siblings and I will help them clean up the mess when the water recedes,” he said.
