Two die, over 2,000 evacuated as Terengganu floodwaters rise

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 29 ― Floods in the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia have claimed the lives of a boy and youth in Terengganu.

Khalid Al-Walid Juzaiman, 12, was found drowned after he was said to have slipped into an irrigation canal in Kampung Tok Hakim, Bukit Payung at 1.30pm yesterday.

Meanwhile, 17-year-old Zulfaiz Zukarmi, a student from SMK Bukit Payong, Hulu Besut was found drowned after he fell into Sungai Besut about 5pm.

The number of flood evacuees at 49 temporary relief centres in the state rose to 2,019 as at 10pm, compared to 1,748 at 4pm.

Besut recorded a sharp increase in the number of victims with 449 people being sheltered at nine relief centres, Hulu Terengganu (782 victims, 18 centres), Setiu (365 victims, eight centres), Marang (71 victims, one centre), Dungun (159 victims, four centres), Nerus (126 victims, two centres) and Kuala Terengganu (67 victims, two centres).

In Kelantan, the number of flood victims rose as 5,016 people moved to 67 relief centres, as at 9pm today compared to 3,033 victims as at 4pm.

According to the Social Welfare Department's "Infobanjir” application, Pasir Mas had the most number of flood victims with 1,716 people at 22 evacuation centres, followed by Kota Baru (1,071 people, nine centres), Pasir Puteh (1,129 people, 11 centres), Tanah Merah (472 people, 14 centres) and Jeli (345 people, three centres). ― Bernama
