Retired civil servant admits to RM300 bribe

IPOH, Nov 16 — A retired Perak Mineral and Geoscience Department officer pleaded guilty at the Session’s Court here today for a corruption offence two years ago.

R. Thangavelu, 61, who was formerly attached with the Department’s Technical Service Unit, admitted to receiving RM300 from one Mohamad Imran Abdullah, who had official dealings with him.

Thangavelu was charged with committing the offence at the department’s geochemistry office at Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah here at about 4.10pm on September 4, 2015.

Sessions Court judge S. Indra Nehru set December 19 for decision pending facts of case.

Thangavelu was charged on August 10 under Section 165 of the Penal Code which makes it an offence for a public servant to obtain anything valuable from someone, without consideration.

He faces a two years jail sentence or fine or both.

He is currently out on RM9,000 bail with one surety.

Thangavelu was represented by M. Kathan while Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission deputy public prosecutor Nurul Wahida Jalaluddin prosecuted.
