TASIK GELUGOR, Nov 9 — Already burdened by damaged homes, business owners are facing losses in assets amounting to tens of thousands in ringgit.
Computers, furniture and electrical and specialised equipment were among the items these folks lost in the floods that hit Penang.
They also face uncertainty over when operations would resume.
Pasti Al-Mansur religious kindergarten principal Nurul Muna Mansur, 33, said school books, records, computers and furniture were all damaged in the floods, with losses amounting to about RM50,000.
"This is the first time such a flood occurred since I started my business six years ago,” she said.
She said it would take her at least six weeks before she could replace her damaged furniture and teaching material.
Although not a stranger to flooding, Nurul Muna said she initially expected the recent storm to be like any other, but did not count in its intesity and the trail of destruction it left behind.
She said her house next to the kindergarten was also flooded, leaving her no alternative space to conduct classes.
"I will need at least a month to recover from this disaster.
"Most of the furniture is gone, so we have to start all over again.
"It is going to be tough,” she said.
Nurul Muna said all the 23 children at her kindergarten and their families were also affected by the floods.
"I called to inform the parents about the closure but found out they were roughing it out too,” she said.
Meanwhile, Qaseh Humaira spa owner Che Nur Azwani Che Sidek, 22, said she would need at least two months to reopen her business.
"More than three-quarters of my equipment has been destroyed. I cannot calculate the value of the lost items, but it is upwards of RM10,000.”
Che Nur added she lost equipment such as mattresses, bath tubs and spa cosmetics in the floods.
