SEBERANG PERAI, Nov 7 — Flood waters in Penang have started to recede, revealing material losses suffered in one of the state’s worst flooding disasters.
Some victims like wheelchair-bound Ng Teng Wei, 43, said they had lost nearly all of their possessions in the flood over the weekend.
A sales adviser by trade, the father of three said he lost important items like his personal computer and a car when the floods hit his home in Taman Seri Rambai.
The floods were the culmination of a desperate week for Ng, who will be using a wheelchair for months after breaking his right leg in a fall last week.
"My wife and three daughters are cleaning the house now but I can’t help them. We’ve nearly lost everything. It’s too much to calculate but so many things are ruined” he said.
Ng said he was lying in bed when the waters came, almost reaching the level of his bed.
He was evacuated by Fire and Rescue department personnel by boat at around 12.45am on Sunday.
"The doctors say I may be in a wheelchair for three to six months. Until then, my wife will have to drive me to meet clients.”
"It’s just been a very unlucky week,” he said reflectively.
Ng was one of over 200 people who were evacuated to the Seberang Perai Tengah district office.
The evacuation centre was one of three places visited by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor today.
Another of the evacuees, who only wanted to be known as Lian, 37, said she lost several daily supplies from her home in Taman Desa.
"The waters rose with incredible speed — it was waist high in less than an hour. At the time, there was only me, my aged mother and my eight-year-old son,” she said.
"We lost our furniture, supplies and even my child’s medicine and inhaler were destroyed.
"It’s up in the air at the moment because I don’t even know how I’m going to clean up by myself. There’s just so much to do.”
Ng said he hoped the federal and state authorities would improve flood mitigation in Penang.
"Our residential area had a water pump, but it couldn’t stop the flood. Maybe this is something they can improve.
"I know they (Najib and other leaders) can do something. They wouldn’t have come here if they didn’t feel the need to help us.”
