BUKIT MERTAJAM, Nov 5 — Penangites rallied together to aid their fellow man in the face of the state’s worst floods in recent history.
People from all races and backgrounds stood shoulder to shoulder to help those affected by rising floodwaters, which displaced thousands across the state.
Some helped their neighbours to evacuate, or warned oncoming traffic about flooding that lay ahead.
Welfare organisations like One Hope Charity and Welfare Berhad rallied together to help distribute food and water to flood victims throughout the mainland.
Chairman Chua Sui Hau said over 200 volunteers helped to hand out 30,000 food items like buns, biscuits, and mineral water to evacuation centres.
"We are getting the food straight from the manufacturers, using lorries and four wheel drives to distribute the food,” he told Malay Mail at the Seberang Perai Tengah district office, which was converted into an evacuation centre.
"People have been working around the clock, but we expect that more food will be needed if the rains carry on. We will do as much as we can for the victims.”
One of the volunteers was Cheah Gek Kim, 52, who arrived at the district office at noon to help out.
"My home in Kota Permai was thankfully not affected, but many of the houses around were inundated with floodwater.
"There are so many victims, and I feel it is our duty to help out. This is an unprecedented event.
"My husband and son are here to help, and my son brought some of his young friends as well. We’ll stay here as long as we’re needed.”
With her was Yoong Kah Yin, 15, who said she was happy to help out.
"My home was also hit by the floodwater. But I decided to join the volunteer efforts because there are many people who need help.
"It’s important to come forward and contribute during times like this.”
