KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 28 ― The country’s biggest highway concessionaire clarified today that toll collection at Batu Tiga and Sungai Rasau along the Federal Highway is only scheduled to expire on December 31, 2038.

In a statement, PLUS Malaysia Berhad said it had received several enquiries on the compensation due following the government’s announcement yesterday on the abolition of toll collection at the two highway points in Selangor under its operation, as well as the third in Bukit Kayu Hitam in Kedah.

"The announcement made by YAB Prime Minister means that abolishment of toll collection effective 1 January 2018 at the Batu Tiga and Sungai Rasau toll plazas are realized 20 years ahead of schedule.

"As discussions are on-going, we will make the necessary announcement upon receipt of further details from the government,” it said.

It pointed out that it had restructured the collection for all tolls under its control following the 2011 privatisation and revised Concession Agreement the same year, adding that there had been no increases on PLUS highways since 2005.

Najib, who is also the first finance minister, announced the abolition of four tolls nationwide during the Budget 2018 tabling in Parliament yesterday.

Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani was reported saying the move would benefit 140,000 motorists travelling along the Federal Highway ― a 45km-long route, 16 of which are tolled, that has been connecting towns in the greater Klang Valley since 1974.

Aside from the two tolls in Selangor and Bukit Kayu Hitam, the government also announced the removal of toll on the Eastern Dispersal Link in Johor from January 2018.

PLUS currently owns a total of 94 tolls nationwide. Among its other highway operations are: the New Klang Valley Expressway, the North-South Expressway, the Malaysia-Singapore Central Crossing, the Butterworth-Kulim Expressway and the Penang Bridge.
