KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 16 — Kuala Lumpur has been ranked as a safer place to live in compared to other major cities like Beijing and Shanghai, according to a report by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).

The EIU’s Safe Cities Index 2017 ranked KL for the first time, placing it at 31st place out of 60 cities in the worldwide with 73.11 points.

But Tokyo, Singapore and Osaka topped the list, which ranked cities based on 49 indicators, including health, infrastructure and personal security.

At number 60 was Karachi, one of ten new cities added in the index this year.

"Although it performs poorly across all of the categories, it was dragged down by a very low level of personal security (60th)” the report said.

While there were many factors for putting the Pakistan city at the bottom of the list, the report said the city experienced the "most frequent and most severe terrorist attacks”.
