KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 15 — Authorities have blocked a popular fan fiction website based on complaints that it contained obscene material.

"MCMC received complaints from the public on the contents of this website.

"Our team made a detailed study and found that there were content which include obscene scenes from their romance and erotic stories,” a Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) spokesperson was quoted as saying in Free Malaysia Today.

The spokesperson reportedly said that MCMC had acted in accordance with Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

The Section allows the commission to act on any improper use of network facilities or network service, including transmission of communication to channel obscene or indecent materials.

Fan Fiction, on its Twitter page, said Malaysia was the second country after Indonesia to block fanfiction.net, a website where fans of established novels or even movies write their own stories using characters from those fictions. JK Rowling’s Harry Potter has the most number of fan fiction stories on fanfiction.net.  

"Malaysia has joined Indonesia as the two only countries on earth that has blocked access to FanFiction.Net.” Fan Fiction tweeted last Thursday.

Last month, MCMC blocked video game platform provider Steam over a combat game called Fight of Gods”.

The game, according to news reports, featured gods and other religious figures such as Jesus Christ and Buddha fighting one another in the line of popular one vs one fighting games such as Street Fighter and Tekken.

The block was lifted after Steam restricted local access to the video game.
