KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 9 — The Muslim Consumers Association of Malaysia (PPIM) has denied responsibility for a campaign to raise money to pay a woman’s fine for practising dentistry without a licence.

An activist from the group, Muhammad Zharif Johor, said the campaign to raise RM70,000 was started by another NGO, Malaysia Islamic Economic Activist Organisation (PPEM).

"Those who are representing her are PPEIM. Not us. Do not mistake them for us,” he said during an interview with Bernama Radio today.

PPIM chief activist Datuk Nadzim Johan said it was not a crime to help the woman pay her fine.

He also said the woman has admitted to her wrongdoing and punished for it.

"I don’t see no wrong in this. In fact, it is pahala,” he said, adding that PPIM has only advised Nur Farahanis Ezatty Adli, 20.

The group also denied allegations that they took 10 per cent of collections for supporting a case.

"We have never charged. The agencies that are with us, the consultants, they charge, not us. I mean like the lawyers, they do not do it for free,” Zharif said.

Nur Farhanis pleaded guilty last month for operating an unregistered private dental clinic in Melaka. She served six days of her six-month sentence for not paying up the court fine of RM70,000.
