MELAKA, June 27 — The flood situation in Melaka has improved with only 126 people from 27 families staying at three evacuation centres as of 8pm tonight, compared to 154 comprising 31 families this afternoon.
Malaysia Civil Defence Force, Melaka director Lt Col (CD) Effendy Ali in a statement today said the victims were sheltered at Balai Raya Bukit Balai and Balai Raya Kampung Pulau in Alor Gajah, and Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Tehel in Jasin.
"Jasin District recorded the highest number of flood victims with 91, from 19 families and they are staying at SK Tehel.
"For Alor Gajah District, 20 victims from three families are at Balai Raya Bukit Balai and 15 others from five families are at Balai Raya Kampung Pulau,” said Effendy who is also Melaka State Disaster Management Committee Secretariat chief.
He said heavy rain since midnight on Monday caused the water at Sungai Durian Tunggal, Sungai Melaka and Sungai Tehel to overflow and inundate five areas within three to seven hours.
"The five affected areas are Kampung Bukit Tambun, Kampung Bukit Balai and Kampung Pulau in Alor Gajah as well as Kampung Tanjung Laboh and Kampung Parit Lampong in Jasin,” he said.
He said the weather was also reported to have improved. — Bernama
