KUALA LUMPUR, June 22 — Besides making sure roads are safe, this year’s Ops Selamat 11 will also focus on making sure homes are safe when left unoccupied during the festive season, said Kuala Lumpur deputy police chief DCP Datuk Mazlan Lazim.

He urged the public to make use of the services the force was offering to ensure that their property and belongings were safe while they were far from home.

Mazlan, who launched this year’s operation at KL Sentral yesterday, shared a few situational occurrences and ways to handle them with the help of police and the advanced technology used to help them.

When your house gets broken into...

When you are inside the premises

― Cooperate with the robbers and do not retaliate.

― Remember which rooms you or the robbers have entered and try to recall what was touched during the process.

― When the robbers have left with your valuables, leave the premises with your loved ones and seek assistance from your neighbours.

― Call the police once security is assured and if you or your family members are injured during the robbery, call the ambulance.

When you are not in the premises

― Call the police immediately on 999 (toll-free emergency number)

― Do not enter the property, on no account tidy up or touch anything until the police have inspected the scene.

― If you suspect that the robbers might still be in your house, go to a safe place, watch your property and await the arrival of police officers.

Make a thorough list of everything that has been stolen from your house and assist police in their investigation.

When you are leaving the house for vacation…

― Keep your house doors locked and make sure the lights at the porch and the back entrance of your house are on.

― Ensure your windows are closed and and latched.

― Secure all your valuables and important documents in a safe place or bring it with you when you leave the house.

― Download the ‘balik kampung’ form from the official Royal Malaysia Police website — http://www.rmp.gov.my/docs/default-source/default-document-library/borang-maklumat-balik-kampung.pdf

― Fill up the form, hand it to the nearest police station so that police can keep an eye on your  house during their patrols while you are away on holiday.

― Besides the virtual form, one can also use the Short Messaging System (SMS) to inform police about leaving the house unoccupied during the festive season.

― SMS could be made by typing POLIS (state code) BK (home address) (date of absence) and sent to 32728
