SHAH ALAM, June 16 — Three people, included a married couple, were arrested yesterday for allegedly cultivating ganja plants in their rented condominium unit.
The 31-year-old husband, his 22-year-old wife and their accomplice, a man in his 20s, had converted a rented condominium in Puchong into an indoor nursery for cultivating the plants, believed to be for local distribution.
Selangor deputy police chief Deputy Commissioner Datuk Abdul Rashid Ab Wahab said 38 pots of ganja plants measuring between 20cm and 100cm in height were found in the condo.
"The plants were not yet ready for harvest. It was good that we caught them quickly.” According to Abdul Rashid, the plants were about six months old.
Investigators found nine pots in a temperature-controlled room with artificial lighting to assist in the plants’ growth.
The remaining 29 pots were found in the unit’s balcony.
Abdul Rashid said police picked up the couple near Seri Kembangan at about 5pm on Monday following a tip-off.
After questioning them, the couple led the police to the unit where the third suspect, believed to be the nursery’s caretaker, was detained.
A search of the premises then led to the seizure of the plants, said Abdul Rashid.
Investigations revealed the couple operated an online business selling cosmetics and perfumes.
Abdul Rashid said the couple was skillful as they used special fertiliser to cultivate the seeds they obtained online without causing any suspicion among their neighbours.
"We have yet to ascertain the total value of the plants, but we believe there was enough to supply thousands of users,” he said.
The latest discovery follows the arrest of a 58-year-old army veteran last month who went by the moniker "Dr Ganja”, for growing the substance in his house in Klang.
The suspect had prescribed the drug as medicinal cannabis to those seeking an alternative to modern treatment.
Meanwhile, 15 people, including three women, were nabbed for their alleged involvement in drug-pushing syndicates throughout the state.
The suspects, aged between 25 and 40, were picked up in multiple raids in Gombak, Seri Kembangan and Ampang Jaya between last Saturday and Tuesday.
This brings the overall drug seizure in the state to 33.44kg worth RM81,000.
