KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 — The attack on Kluang MP Liew Chin Tong at a Ramadan bazaar and allegations against non-Muslim Pakatan Harapan leaders may indicate a scheme to target the group, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said.
The federal Opposition leader and PKR president further criticised Liew’s attackers, saying their attack on him while distributing dates at a bazaar in Kluang was un-Islamic and against the spirit of Ramadan.
"What PKR fears is the recent spate of incidents including the spreading of a fake Whatsapp message purportedly by Subang MP Sivarasa Rasiah and Seputeh MP Teresa Kok and criticisms against the book by Selangor Speaker Hannah Yeoh,” she said in a statement.
Dr Wan Azizah said the incidents, along with Liew’s attack, suggest there was a concerted effort by unnamed groups to create misunderstanding on racial and religious grounds.
She called Liew's action in trying to distribute dates to fasting Muslims noble, and said he should not have been obstructed despite being a non-Muslim as he served all communities as a federal lawmaker.
"This is not a healthy development for the multi-cultural communities in our country. Therefore, PKR urges all parties to protect the harmony and unity among the people, and reject racism and extremist actions," Dr Wan Azizah said.
She also thanked the police for their swift action in detaining two of the men involved in the scuffle.
In a video of the incident, Liew and his group were shown being verbally and physically attacked at the Ramadan bazaar in Bandar Baru Kluang, before being chased out eventually.
Police yesterday detained two men in Johor over the incident on Saturday, and are seeking four more suspects.
The case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing harm.
