KUALA LUMPUR, June 7 ― The city line monorail’s four-car train sets are currently not in service due to safety reasons, its operator Rapid Rail said today.
Rapid Rail chief executive Datuk Zohari Sulaiman apologised to commuters for the frustration and inconvenience at riding only the two-car train sets but said the company was forced to ground the longer train sets as there were some "safety risks”, though he did not elaborate.
"In the interest of passengers’ safety, we directed for the entire four-car train sets to be re-examined by the train supplier; and for Scomi to make the necessary rectifications,” he said in a statement.
Local rail system manufacturer Scomi Engineering supplies the city’s monorail train sets.
Zohari said the Land Public Transport Commission has been briefed about the matter and has agreed to the move.
Currently the monorail service is operating only with its current six sets of two-car trains with a frequency of eight minutes.
No timeline was given as to when the four-car trains are expected to resume operations.
The suspension of its four-car train sets have infuriated commuters.
Taking cognisance that the disruption of service is taking place just before the Hari Raya celebrations, Rapid Rail said it would extend the shuttle bus services during weekends to cater to those doing their shopping.
"We are ready to consider to extend this shuttle bus services to provide services during weekends as well. We fully understand that KL folks are used to enjoy the convenience provided by the monorail services and have always depended on its services for their daily travels,” Zohari said.
