Others may be detained over UPNM student’s case, says Selangor CP

SHAH ALAM, June 5 — The police may detain several more individuals to help in the investigation over the case of Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) student, Zulfarhan Osman Zulkarnain who died after he was allegedly abused on Thursday.

Selangor Police chief Datuk Seri Abdul Samah Mat said, however, this depended on the development in the investigation on the case.

"No fresh arrests to date, detentions on the case remain at 36 people involving 32 UPNM students while the rest were students from Uniten (Universiti Tenaga Nasional).

"...and investigation is still ongoing. If there is a need to arrest other individuals in connection with the case we will do so but it depends on the development in the investigation,” he told reporters after attending the Selangor Police Contingent Headquarters level Excellent Service Award ceremony and donning of ranks here today.

He said the police were also in the process of recording statements from several witnesses to the case including the doctors who treated the victims to complete investigation.

Commenting on the allegation that Zulfarhan Osman was abused for stealing a laptop belonging to another student, Abdul Samah said, to date, police have yet to receive any report on the computer theft from its owner.

"No police report is made by the student or owner of the missing laptop..if there is, please report to us (police).

"Similarly, on the allegation of bullying and abuse involving a UPNM student prior to this, what I can confirm is that it is the first case reported to us,” he said.

Zulfarhan Osman, 21, UPNM Marine cadet Officer died at the Serdang Hospital at about 10pm, with bruises and scald marks on the body.

He said the death was investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code, and in a follow-up to the incident police remanded 36 UPNM and Uniten students, aged 20 to 21 years for seven days until this Friday, to help in the investigation. — Bernama
