KUALA LUMPUR, June 5 — The disagreement over who from among Pakatan Harapan leaders should become prime minister is the latest to show the fundamental rifts within the Opposition pact, said MCA’s Datuk Chai Kim Sen.
The party’s national publicity chairman told the pact to openly admit that there is no agreement among its various parties on the matter, rather than continuing to mislead the public.
Chai pointed out that this was also the case with PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang’s bid to raise Shariah sentencing limits, noting that the parties in Pakatan Harapan appeared to all hold differing position.
"This highlights the seriousness of their internal conflicts, whereby they cannot seem to decide even on their choice for prime minister.
"Pakatan Harapan may appear to be a coalition on the surface, but in reality they hold personal interests at hearts,” he said in a statement.
The pact’s inability to agree on a candidate for prime minister was highlighted during the recent PKR annual assembly, when placards endorsing Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim were handed out for Pakatan Harapan leaders to display during a press conference.
Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin both refused to do so, and later said they did not endorse Anwar for the post.
Anwar is currently serving a five-year prison sentence for sodomy, and the plan to make him prime minister — dubbed the "Kajang Move 2.0” — involves installing his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as a placeholder prime minister.
It would also require Anwar to somehow obtain a royal pardon, which would then remove his disqualification to contest a by-election that he must necessarily win in order to be able to hold the post.
