KUALA LUMPUR, June 4 — Malaysian medical student Soh Zhi Min, 23, who was killed in a road accident in Scotland on Wednesday, has been described as a "bright star of the future”.

Tributes are pouring in for the Edinburgh University student from Bandar Kinrara, Puchong, including flowers placed near the spot where she tragically lost her life while cycling.

The university’s undergraduate medical teaching director Dr David Kluth said: "Zhi Min was a talented, thoughtful student, who was well-respected by her peers and always keen to help.

"She will be deeply missed by the medical school community. Our sympathies at this time are with her family and friends. We have all lost a bright star of the future.”

Soh was recently elected secretary of the Edinburgh University Cardiovascular Society.

News of her death was met with an outpouring of sympathy on social media.

One described her death as a "terribly sad tragedy”, while another wrote: "My condolences to her family and friends, so heartbroken.”

Edinburgh’s Road Policing Unit Police Sergeant Fraser Wood also extended his condolences to the family, and thanked those who had stepped forward to help Soh during the incident.

"A number of witnesses have come forward and we are continuing to speak to them as part of our ongoing inquiries,” he said.

Soh was struck by a minibus at about 8.30am after she fell into the vehicle’s path when her bicycle wheels got stuck in a tram track.

The incident has prompted calls for better safety for cyclists in the city.

Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican said he was saddened by the passing of the Public Service Department scholar, who was into her fourth year.

"It is a tragic event and I am deeply saddened by her death,” he said.

Reezal said the Umno Overseas’ Students Bureau, which is headed by him, had given the family RM1,000 as a token of support.

Soh’s family is making arrangements to fly to Edinburgh to bring her body back.
