KUALA KRAI, June 2 — The shock and horror of it all...

A rubber tapper and his family were horrified when a van ferrying 12 students and two teachers of a religious school skidded, plunged into a ravine and turned-turtle before crashing into the front of their home in Kampung Telekung here today.

The crash at the 55km Jalan Kuala Krai-Kota Baru claimed the lives of seven male students while the rest sustained various degrees of head and body injuries.

Azrin Hassan, 41, said his wife, four children and mother were watching television in the living room when they heard a deafening crash in front of the house.

"I think the house shook a bit from the impact before I found that a van had turned-turtle in front of the premises.

"I was shocked and horrified to find a group of teenagers in the mangled van before the villagers arrived to help the victims,” he told reporters at the scene.

The van damaged the front portion of Azrin’s house.

In the 9.40am incident, the seven male students from Maahad Tahfiz Al-Hashimi Kampung Tualang here were killed while five other students and two teachers were injured.

The condition of six of those injured was described as serious.

Twelve students and two accompanying teachers were on their way to attend the Al Quran Interpretation Conference at Madinah Ramadan near the Sultan Muhammad IV Stadium in Kota Baru when the crash occurred. — Bernama
