Sabah catamaran SAR operation called off after 126 days

KOTA KINABALU, June 2 — The search and rescue (SAR) operation for five victims of a catamaran which capsized in waters off Pulau Mengalum on January 28 was called off at 9.20 this morning.

Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) said in a statement today said the operation was called off after they did not find any positive indication about the victims during the 126-day operation.

"The MMEA would like to thank to all departments and agencies for their cooperation during rescue the operation,” said the statement.

On January 28, a catamaran carrying 28 Chinese tourists and three crew members, sank due to strong winds and big waves while on the way to Mengalum.

The SAR operation found 26 victims, including four who had died. — Bernama
