KUALA LUMPUR, June 2 — The government is very concerned about the welfare of the Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) settlers, consistent with its role in promoting the socioeconomic development of the country, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
He said the majority of those who contributed to the country's success as the world's second largest producer of palm oil as well as the fifth largest producer of natural rubber were Felda settlers.
"As long as I hold the post of prime minister, God willing, I will strive to improve Felda's progress and that the welfare of the settlers is guaranteed," he said on his posting on his blog www.najibrazak.com about the welfare of Felda settlers today.
Najib said Felda through its business model, had improved the lives of the settlers for generations until today.
"Presently, we are working on the development of homes for the second generation of Felda settlers that enables them to own a home at a price of RM70,000," he said.
He said a total of 8,470 units of homes for the second generation of settlers were being built in Phase 1 and 4,990 units expected to be completed this year.
"Felda also has its Settlers Welfare Fund that allows the settlers to receive financial assistance of up to RM10,000 for those suffering from chronic diseases and the destruction of property caused by natural disasters. Applications can also be made for the purchase of health aids," he said.
In education, Najib said Felda children who were successfully pursuing higher education locally and abroad were eligible to receive financial incentives such as settlers children's incentive scheme and special fund for students to further their studies abroad.
"Another special assistance provided by Felda is the special loan of up to RM40,000 to help refurbish existing homes including the enlargement of the house, and it is interest free," he said. — Bernama
