KUALA LUMPUR, June 1 — The Pakatan Harapan opposition pact should consider the ramifications of embracing Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, said an Umno Youth leader.
Umno Youth assistant secretary Datuk Mohd Sahfri Abd Aziz said recent actions by the former prime minister suggested that he was gradually co-opting the pact.
He noted that Dr Mahathir, who is Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia chairman, did not discount the possibility of again becoming prime minister if the pact wins federal power.
Sahfri also pointed out that it was Dr Mahathir who yesterday announced that the pact has decided on a common logo, which his party previously pressed for.
"So, why did Dr Mahathir make such a remark right after announcing Pakatan Harapan’s logo? I think there something wrong here,” he said.
The PPBM chairman yesterday said the Pakatan Harapan logo will be unveiled on June 9.
The pact is officially headed by Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, although Dr Mahathir has been increasingly prominent since his party joined the informal alliance that includes DAP, PKR and Amanah.
Critics also alleged previously that Dr Mahathir was now the de facto head of the federal opposition.
