KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 — Two men paid a heavy price for being drunk in separate incidents — one died and the other suffered a broken leg.

Early yesterday, a 39-year-old man cheated death when he slept under a trailer during a midnight thunderstorm in Tambun, Ipoh.

Ipoh Fire and Rescue chief P. Samasuvam said rescuers were called at 5.50am to save a man lying motionless under a trailer with his leg bleeding profusely.

The man was believed to have been drunk during the wee hours and had sought shelter from the storm under the trailer.

The driver had parked the vehicle at his usual parking spot near his home in Tambun on Sunday night.

"We believe the man was drunk, and had fallen asleep under the middle portion of the trailer,” Samasuvam said.

"Before dawn, when the driver boarded the trailer and tried to reverse the vehicle, there was a scream.

"The driver’s wife saw the man under the trailer and alerted her husband.”

Samasuvam said the victim was unable to move when rescuers arrived and removed him.

He said the screams of the driver’s wife probably saved the victim, who was sent to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital.

In a separate incident, a man believed to be drunk bled to death on Sunday morning after he sustained a deep gash on his right arm at Alamanda Condominium off Jalan Cheras, Kuala Lumpur.

Police have ruled out foul play and believe the wound was self-inflicted when the man smashed a window panel during a fit of rage on the groundfloor of the multi-storey building.

Witnesses told police the man was seen at the lobby, vomiting and in a semi-conscious state at about 6.45am.

Cheras police chief Assistant Commissioner Chong Kok Sin said residents tried to calm him down but he stood up and started stumbling from the lobby towards a mobile phone shop about 10m away.

"The man then started punching the shop’s glass window several times until it shattered,” he said.

"We believe the glass shard could have caused the  gash in his right arm.”

Chong said the man bled profusely and collapsed some 20 metres from a sundry shop.

Police arrived and found him motionless at the shop entrance.

The body was sent to the hospital mortuary for a post-mortem.
