KUALA LUMPUR, May 29 — Aman Laut, a RM1.2 billion mixed development project in Kedah, has been issued a stop work order by the Department of Environment (DoE).

The Star reported today that the project, dubbed the "Dubai of Malaysia”, had started reclamation works despite it not obtaining an approval from DoE to date.

"Only after it has been approved can the work be carried out,” DoE director general Datuk Dr Ahmad Kamarulnajib Che Ibrahim was quoted saying.

The ambitious project in Alor Setar involves high-end bungalows, condominiums, malls and luxury eateries, which is expected to radically change the skyline at the city’s seafront.

Environmental watchdog Sahabat Alam Malaysia reportedly said that mangroves along the coast is being affected due to the reclamation works.

Local fishermen were also reported to have opposed the project as they feared it would jeopardise their income.

The Kedah government has said that developers would be asked to re-submit a full Environmental Impact Assessment report on the project.
