KUALA LUMPUR, May 26 — The organisers of the KL SEA Games said they have taken adequate steps including scrutinising the thousands of athletes, officials and even journalists who will be part of the Games, given the recent terror attacks in the region.

Tunku Imran Ja’afar, the KL SEA Games deputy organising chairman and Olympic Council of Malaysia president, said the organisers had taken note of the worrying trend of attacks by extremists.

The bi-annual Games, being only 84 days away, is the biggest sporting event in the region.

"We have a committee looking at security and it is headed by the Inspector-General of Police (Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar) himself,” said Tunku Imran.

"Of course, there is a need to be concerned... these terror attacks are a worrying trend and are so close to home. We will stand advised by the police as they are the experts but on our end, we will scrutinise the list of athletes, officials, journalists... everyone involved.”

Tunku Imran said security at venues would also be beefed up.

"We can’t take anything for granted,” he added.

IS militants had targeted sporting venues in the past.

KL SEA Games 2017 chief executive officer Datuk Seri Zolkples Embong said security measures had been taken to ensure the venues were secure.

"The security committee has been conducting regular briefings and we’ve been told we have enough police personnel to monitor the situation,” Zolkples said.

"Even hotels and public places will be closely monitored.”

He added scanners and metal detectors would be placed at hotels and venues and that officials and athletes would have to adhere to the security measures placed to ensure the safety of all.

In the 2015 Paris terror attack, an explosion occurred outside Stade de France during the France-Germany football match.

In March last year, a suicide bomber killed at least 29 and wounded 60 others in an attack on a crowd gathered at a football stadium south of Baghdad.

On Monday, a suicide bomber hit the Manchester Arena, killing 22 and leaving dozens injured during an Ariana Grande concert. Concert-goers had, following the carnage, slammed the organisers for lax security.
