KUALA LUMPUR, May 18 — A proposal to prohibit the construction of new indoor parking lots here will not encourage public transport use and will only inconvenience the public, said Malaysian Consumer Movement.
MCM president Darshan Singh Dhillon said such initiatives should only be considered when a robust public transportation network was in place.
"The MCM believes that implementing such initiative in the near future may cause more harm than benefit to consumers as efficiency, safety, connectivity, affordability, convenience of public transportation continue to be a challenge,” he said in a statement.
Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor was reported as saying that the Kuala Lumpur City Hall was considering prohibiting the construction of parking bays in buildings to encourage public transport usage.
Darshan then urged DBKL to expend more efforts on improving public transportation.
"While the overall quality of public transportation has improved significantly, there is much room for greater enhancement,” he said.
