GEORGE TOWN, April 7 — A motion condemning Tasek Gelugor MP Datuk Shabudin Yahaya over his statement of rape victims marrying their rapists will be tabled at the Penang state legislative assembly next month, said Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

The Penang lawmaker said the state legislative assembly may not have the power to remove the Umno MP but it could table a motion to condemn him and his statements.

"We want to state that the state does not stand with him and we want to continue to demand that action be taken to expel him,” he said in a press conference after launching a solo art exhibition at Jen Hotel here today.

He said Shabudin had considered rapists as "good husband” material and that they could be forgiven for marrying the victim which meant he had no respect for women and do not view rape as a serious offence.

When told that Shabudin had claimed that his remarks were taken out of context, Lim said there is a video of the MP making such remarks in Parliament.

"The video is so clear so now he’s trying to deny the undeniable, he’s got two wrongs, one, for saying it and another for denying it,” he said.

He said the video clip clearly showed the former Shariah court judge talking about girls as young as nine-years-old who can be married off.

"We don’t agree to child marriages, even under Islam, it is not sanctioned, especially if it’s equated to a way out for rapists, that is wrong,” he said.

Lim expressed his regret that the Barisan Nasional leadership had failed to address this issue seriously or to take action against Shabudin.

"There’s a long of anger over this, among women especially and we want to ensure that justice is done so we will continue to demand that he be expelled,” he said.

Two days ago, Shabudin came under fire after he suggested that rape victims be allowed to marry their rapists as a remedy to social problems.

He said it would be "safer” for the rape victims to marry their rapists and also suggested that even nine-year-old girls are "physically and spiritually” ready for marriage.

This morning, Shabudin threatened to sue any media that had "twisted” his remarks during his debate of the Sexual Offences Against Children Bill 2017.

He claimed that he had meant those who had consensual sex below the statutory age limit who can be married under state Islamic law provisions.

He also claimed that he had never suggested that nine-year-old girls can be forced to marry their rapists.
