KUALA LUMPUR, March 22 — Appointing the right leader is crucial to ensure a continuous transformation process in companies and institutions, said Permodalan Nasional Bhd’s Chairman, Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar.

Wahid said the move, which was in line with the government’s aspiration, must appoint the leader with unquestionable integrity and set the right key performance indicators (KPIs) for the employees.

"It is important to set the right KPIs and focus on relevant KPIs and to make they are not driven only by one person but by a team,” he said during one of the panel sessions at the Global Transformation Forum 2017 (GTF 2017) here today.

Wahid was one of three panellists during the session, entitled ‘National Transformation: Problems, Perspectives and Pathway’.

The other panellists in the session, moderated by Managing Director of Khazanah Research Institute, Datuk Charon Mokhzani, were Sir Micheal Barber, Managing Partner of Delivery Associates and Omari Issa, Chairman of Amref Helath Africa International.

Meanwhile, Omari said, although the KPI measurement was important in order to assess how well a particular company or employee has progressed, it alone was not enough to ensure the rapid development for organisation.

"We also have to benchmark against the best practices. When you begin to compare yourself regionally or internationally, you may find that you are actually not doing as well,” he said.

He said only by competing regionally and internationally, the companies will be able to unleash their true potentials and achieve even higher results thus providing better transformation plan.

"Whenever we embarked on transformation, we must have the element of sustainability, meaning that any initiative that has been announced would continue even after the person that initiated it is not there anymore,” he said.

The two-day GTF 2017, starting today, attracted 3,000 executives, business owners, political leaders and iconinc celebrities to engage and share their experiences and best practices on how to drive transformation.

Among the public figures are Executive Chairman of Alibaba Group/Philanthropist, Jack Ma; Olympic Games’ 100-metre gold medallist Usain Bolt; Minister of International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed and Minister of Youth and Sports Khairy Jamaludin. — Bernama
