KUALA  LUMPUR, 28 Feb — A boiler maintenance personnel was sentenced to a total of six years’ jail by the High Court here today for giving support and possession of items related to the Islamic State terrorist group.

Judge Datuk Azman Abdullah handed down the sentence on Roshelmyzan Husain, 33, after the father of two pleaded guilty to the two charges.

He was sentenced to four years’ jail on the charge of giving support to the terrorist group and two years’ jail for possession of items related to terrorism.

However, Azman ordered Roshelmyzan to serve the jail sentences concurrently from the date of his arrest on June 29 last year.

In the judgement, Azman said the court took into account the accused’s guilty plea and regret, but the punishment had to reflect the firmness of the court so that others would not commit the same mistake.

"You have a responsibility towards your family, you should not have focused on matters which are of no benefit. The progress in technology facilitates the authorities to detect a person’s action and this, not many people know,” he added.

Roshelmyzan pleaded guilty to giving support to the Islamic State group through the Telegram application in the chat group "Gagak Hitam” on his handphone at Telok Kapas, Rantau Panjang, Klang, at 7.57am on March 30, 2016.

The charge, under Section 130J(1)(a) of the Penal Code, provides an imprisonment for life, or imprisonment for up to 30 years, or with fine, and shall also be liable to forfeiture of any property used in connection with the

commission of the offence.

For possession of terrorism-related items, he admitted to having in his possession a video and an image relating to the Islamic State group on his handphone at Sime Darby Plantations Sdn Bhd Building, Nuri Refinery, Lebuh Sultan Muhamed 1, Kawasan Perusahaan PKNS Fasa 2, Bandar Sultan Sulaiman, Port Klang, at 2.10pm

on June 29, 2016.

The charge was made under Section 130JB (1)(a) of the Penal Code and punishable with an imprisonment for up to seven years, or with fine, and shall also be liable to forfeiture of items of the items, upon conviction.

In mitigation, Roshelmyzan, represented by lawyers Syahredzan Johan and Louis Liow, said he was remorseful and promised not to repeat the mistake, which was his first offence.

The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Fadzlan Mohd Noor. — Bernama
