KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 19 — Pakatan Harapan parties are in full support of DAP's proposal for Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to be made interim prime minister and deputy prime minister if the Opposition wins the next general election.
But leaders from the Opposition parties stressed that their endorsement of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as prime minister-designate remained unchanged, even though the Federal Court dismissed the PKR de facto leader’s bid to review his sodomy conviction and jail sentence.
"I think Lim Kit Siang is being practical. Wan Azizah is a logical choice, just like how the Pakatan Harapan parties have agreed to have her as Opposition Leader," Pakatan Harapan chief secretary Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah told Malay Mail Online.
Lim, who is Gelang Patah MP, had mooted the suggestion for the PKR president and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) president to be made interim PM and DPM if the event of a Pakatan Harapan victory in the 14th general election.
"If we can agree on Anwar as PM, shouldn't be a problem in having a leader from another party, for example Muhyiddin, as DPM," Saifuddin added.
Amanah communications director Khalid Samad said that his party did not object to Dr Wan Azizah's leadership, but such a plan would need "further endorsement" before it could be implemented.
"We have not discussed the issue at the leadership level in detail. What has been agreed is that DSAI should be made the PM the moment that opportunity presents itself. In the meantime, an interim PM is required," he explained, referring to Anwar.
"Amanah will provide full support to Kak Wan, if such a situation was to occur. We will give our full support to Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as well," the Shah Alam MP said.
Khalid said that Pakatan Harapan critics have unjustly underestimated Dr Wan Azizah's leadership capabilities and urged all parties to publicly state their support for her.
He also suggested that a leadership council be formed to oversee the role of the interim prime minister and deputy prime minister once the candidates were picked.
"This is to make sure that there will never again occur the kind of dictatorship that has developed in BN (Barisan Nasional)," Khalid added.
Today, former PKR secretary-general Rafizi suggested a plan that resembled his previous so-called "Kajang Move” on how Anwar can be made prime minister should Pakatan Harapan win the next general election.
Rafizi said if Pakatan Harapan won the 14th general elections, the pact could instruct the national chief secretary, who would be head of the caretaker government, to apply for a royal pardon for Anwar, who is currently in prison for sodomy, on behalf of the new federal government.
Legal experts have said while Rafizi’s plan seemed plausible, it would be fraught with many obstacles and hinged on getting the PKR de facto leader pardoned by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong,
PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar has said that the Pakatan Harapan Opposition pact will meet next week to decide on their candidate for prime minister.
Its three component parties — PKR, DAP and Amanah — have steadfastly stuck with Anwar as first choice despite his incarceration, but there have been rumours of a disagreement by influential newcomer, PPBM.
