IPOH, Dec 18 — A motorcyclist trying to flee a police dragnet knocked down a traffic cop, seriously injuring him during an operation in Jalan Leong Boon Swee here yesterday.
Constable Mohd Rofizan Musa, 26, who suffered a fractured arm was admitted to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital for treatment.
Deputy district police chief DSP Abdul Rani Alias said the motorcyclist and his pillion rider, both aged 19, were arrested when they fell off their motorcycle following the 3am accident.
The motorcyclist was a mechanic and did not possess a licence.
"Both suspects tried to escape the roadblock in Jalan Leong Boon Swee by making a U-turn and proceeding towards Jalan Datok,” said Abdul Rani.
"Rofizan, who was on duty, tried to flag them down. But, they refused and rammed into him.”
The case is being investigated under Section 43 (1)(A) of Road Transport Act 1987 for careless and inconsiderate driving.
During the operation, police inspected 223 motorcycles.
"About 181 summonses were issued for various offences, including displaying fancy registration plates, non-approved vehicle modification and not displaying ‘P’ licence stickers,” he said.
About 25 policemen from the state traffic department were involved in the operation which lasted until 7am.
