KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 17 — The introduction of the new Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) service will directly result in greater productivity, says Prasarana Group president and group chief executive officer Datuk Seri Azmi Abdul Aziz.

"Efficient public transport will mean members of our workforce will waste less time stuck in their cars during the morning and evening rush hours,” he said.

"This is just one benefit of the MRT, in addition to reducing traffic congestion and greenhouse gas emissions by allowing more cars to be off the road.”

Azmi said the expected daily ridership would hit about 160,000 passengers and the increased mobility of the public would push other government initiatives ahead.

"We are creating a healthier environment and encouraging healthier lifestyles. We want people to take advantage of this transport grid built for them,” he said.

Azmi also said the MRT would have other benefits, with bicycles being allowed on the MRT and Light Rail Transit (LRT) trains during off-peak hours.

"This applies to foldable bicycles, the other models will be too bulky and inconvenient to other commuters,” he said.

Azmi assured the public the trains, tracks, signals equipment and software had been thoroughly tested and were of the highest operating standards.

"We started tests and certification at least six months before going live with the service, including three months of trial operations.

"All design specifications were evaluated, all parameters and standards were met before allowing a single member of the public aboard. We have delivered on a safe, efficient and reliable service.”

He also said the project had set the bar between local and foreign technical and technological cooperation.

"We have heavy involvement of local firms with our foreign partners and this has proven to be a successful and dependable formula, as proven by completing the MRT on schedule.”
