GEORGE TOWN, Dec 6 — Penang registered just five cases involving triad activities in 2016, said Penang police chief Commissioner Datuk Abdul Ghafar Rajab.

He denied that there was a rise in gangsterism in the state, following claims of such in the aftermath on a mass shooting here last week.

"If we look at the crime rate in Penang, the gangsterism cases here are not very high, there are only five cases related to gangsterism, not a lot of cases,” he said in a press conference after he was asked if there is an increased in gangsterism activities in the state.

Abdul Ghafar also stressed that the shooting last Thursday was by a mentally unstable man.

The man, a bodyguard who had only started work for Datuk Ong Teik Kwong for a day, shot dead his employer in the 7.30pm incident while Ong was driving and heading to the first Penang Bridge.

Two others were also killed in the shooting incident. Police arrested the bodyguard and also Ong’s driver, who was also in the car during the incident, to assist in investigations into the case.

Tomorrow, police will cordon off a portion of the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway heading to the first Penang Bridge to conclude their investigations into the case.

The road will be closed between 10am and 5pm tomorrow and Abdul Ghafar had indicated that they hoped to wrap up investigations and charged the suspect for the crime soon.
