Suspected Penang shooter arrested

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 1 — Police have caught the man suspected of shooting three people dead in a car on the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway tonight.

Penang police said the suspect was the personal bodyguard of Datuk Ong Teik Kwong, 32, who was among those killed, The Star Online reported.

He had been travelling in the same car.

"Another passenger in the car tried to escape on foot, but the suspect continued firing shots at him,” Penang Criminal Investigation Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Zainol Samah said was quoted telling a news conference in George Town.

The motive behind the shooting is still being investigated.

The shooting occurred at about 7.30pm on the expressway near the exit to Butterworth and is reported to have caused a four-car collision.

The bodies were located about 50 metres apart from each other, national news agency Bernama reported.

According to reports by other news outlets, a cameraman with national broadcaster RTM, Muhamad Amirul Amin Amir, was also hit by a stray bullet while riding past the area on his motorcycle with his friend Mohamad Iskandar Osman.

The cameraman has been rushed to the Penang Hospital for medical treatment.

Police have closed off the area as well as the road leading to the Penang Bridge towards Butterworth.
