GEORGE TOWN, Nov 29 — Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman is to meet Myanmar Foreign Minister and State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi over the alleged ethnic cleansing of Rohingyas in the country’s northern Rakhine State.

Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican said the meeting would be set at the soonest and that Malaysia had called on the Myanmar government to take necessary action to address the matter.

He said a Wisma Putra senior official had met the Myanmar ambassador to convey Malaysia’s concern over the situation in Myanmar.

"We will find the soonest date for the meeting to discuss the Rohingya issue,” he said to reporters after attending the 4th Ficac East Asia Consular Conference here today.

Last Friday, some 1,000 people held a demonstration in front of the Myanmar embassy here to protest against the atrocities against the country’s Rohingya Muslims.

On another matter, Reezal advised honorary consulars to equip themselves with knowledge on international politics to better understand any particular country. — Bernama
