PETALING JAYA, Nov 13 — Household electrical appliances were destroyed when fire broke out at the Eng Seng Heng store in Jalan SS2/20 last night.

The popular store frequented by housewives and young couples had been closed for business when passersby spotted flames lighting up the night sky at about 7.30pm.

Within minutes the entire second floor was engulfed by flames, attracting the attention of residents from nearby homes.

Four fire engines arrived minutes after receiving the emergency call, and their prompt action prevented the blaze from spreading to the entire row of terrace shoplots.

More than 15 firemen took about an hour to bring the fire under control.

The blaze caused a jam along the busy SS2 commercial and residential district, and police were summoned to ensure the smooth flow of traffic.

The cause of the blaze is yet to be ascertained.
