KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 10 — Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin will address attendees during Patakan Harapan’s inaugural convention this weekend, despite Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) not being a member party.
This was announced by Pakatan Harapan secretariat Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah in a statement today.
"PPBM president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin will also give a speech along with the three main leaders of Pakatan Harapan.
"Besides that, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will also deliver a special address at the convention,” Saifuddin said.
PPBM is not part of the pact comprising PKR, DAP and Amanah, and its relationship with Pakatan Harapan is not yet clear beyond a proposed cooperation to unseat Barisan Nasional in the next general election.
Dr Mahathir had discomfited Pakatan Harapan leaders when he unilaterally declared Muhyiddin to be the opposition’s candidate to be prime minister, which they later rejected in favour of their existing choice, the currently imprisoned Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The party of former Umno malcontents has also not drawn the numbers needed to demonstrate that it has the groundswell of support necessary to challenge Umno, and needed to solicit Anwar’s approval to co-operate with PKR.
The overall theme of the convention is to rally all opposition parties to the same platform, but this was dealt an early blow by PAS, which said it will not attend the event as it is neither a part of the pact or willing to work with DAP.
The convention will be held in Shah Alam this Saturday.
