KOTA BARU, Nov 6 — Some 62.22 per cent per cent or 1,319 of the 2,138 participants of Azam Tani, a programme carried out by the Malaysian Agriculture Research and Development Institute (Mardi) are able to get out of the vicious circle of poverty.

Its director (Promotion and Business Development Centre), Hassan Said, said the programme, carried out since 2010, had succeeded in providing a new lease on life for the participants, with the successful ones able to generate income of between RM500 and RM8,000 a month.

The projects carried out under the programme included farming, cattle-rearing, fish rearing and agro-business, he said at an Azam Tani programme which was opened by Deputy Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub in Pasir Tumboh here today.

In Kelantan, he said, the programme, carried out since 2012, had benefitted 508 people as of last June.

Of the total participants, 280 or 55 per cent were no longer in the poor category, with 22 of the participants earning more than RM5,000 a month, he added. — Bernama
