GEORGE TOWN, Nov 1 — Penang will file a suit against the Election Commission (EC) for its failure to consider the objections filed by the state government.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng accused the EC of failing its duty in conducting the redelineation exercise especially when voters were reduced in his constituency and increased in another constituency.

"I was made to understand that a few of the objections Penang sent to EC have been rejected so we have no choice but to discuss with our lawyers on how to take legal action against EC,” he said in a press conference today.

The Penang lawmaker said the Penang state government, 100 voters and the local government had submitted objections to EC for several constituencies in the state respectively.

Some state assemblymen, who had submitted objections, had already received replies from the EC that inquiries will not be held despite their objections.

"I've not been back so I don't know whether they've sent me letters on the objections submitted by the state government yet,” Lim said.

Air Itam state assemblyman Wong Hon Wai had received a reply from the EC dated October 17 stating that an inquiry will not be held for his objection, made under the Bukit Gelugor parliamentary constituency, as the constituency was not affected by the redelineation exercise.

Lim said the reason Wong had submitted the objection was because the EC had failed in its duty to conduct redelineation exercise for that constituency so the objection should be considered.

Penang had sent eight objections sent to the EC; three for parliamentary constituencies, namely, Bukit Mertajam, Bukit Bendera and Bukit Gelugor and five for state constituencies; Air Putih, Sungai Pinang, Seri Delima, Air Itam and Paya Terubong.

The objections, filed by 100 voters of each constituency, assemblymen and the local council, were submitted before the deadline on October 14.
