Kluang MP Liew Chin Tong alleged that the special draws run by lottery companies like Magnum, Sports Toto and Da Ma Cai were unnecessary, pointing out that they ate into the income of lower income groups which tend to buy tickets regularly. "The finance ministry has allowed for special draws on certain Tuesdays and the profits from the draw are considered as collection for the government. "We have repeatedly asked for the Finance Ministry to stop the practice of special draws as it burdens the people and also eats into the disposable income of the lower income groups," he said in a press conference at the Parliament today. Liew added that the current system of special draws are held on top of the weekly draws on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. He urged Finance Minister II Datuk Johari Abdul Ghani to stop this practice starting 2017, warning of dire consequences on lower income groups in the long run.
