KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 16 — Malaysian fashion designer Sonny San, 54, died after suffering a heart attack this morning.

San was a stalwart of the local fashion scene, most acclaimed for his chic and yet wearable ready-to-wear label Eclipse. The award-winning designer was a mainstay of KL Fashion week, and his peers praised not just his talent but his kindness.

When contacted by The Star, fellow designers Melinda Looi and Khoon Hooi were both too overcome to articulate their grief at his loss.

Founded in 1996, the Eclipse label has proven one of the most enduring Malaysian fashion presences, expanding from being a major presence in the country's most established malls to retail presences in Thailand, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Cambodia, Philippines and Taiwan.
