KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 5 — The police are investigating a case of arson at the carpark of the Jalan Hang Tuah flats in the capital city, where vehicles were set alight early this morning.

Dang Wangi district police chief ACP Zainol Samah said police were alerted at 3.39am to the fire at the carpark in front of Block A of the flats

The fire consumed 15 motorcycles, a Toyota Vios car and the walls of a flat unit that was used as a storeroom, he said, with the Fire and Rescue Department finding that the fire was deliberately set off.

"The Fire and Rescue Department's forensic unit also found a bottle of liquid — possibly petrol — that was used to burn the motorcycles. Three samples and a bottle of liquid have been taken for tests in the lab," he said.

He confirmed that there were close-circuit television cameras (CCTV) at the crime scene, adding that police will record statements from the witness and vehicle owners.

The witness saw two Indian men getting down from a car and pouring fuel and setting alight the motorcycles, he said.

"For now, the source of the incident is still unknown," he said, adding that investigations are still underway.

The case is being investigated under Section 435 of the Penal Code, which covers the offence of mischief by fire or explosive with the intention to cause or the knowledge that it would likely cause property damage amounting to at least RM50.

Those convicted under this offence will face a maximum 14-year jail term and will also be liable to a fine.
