KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 27 ― Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh today urged parties not to speculate on the recent go-kart accident in Pahang that claimed two lives.
He said this included whether the organiser of the event adhered to the safety standards.
Idris added that a special committee formed to look into the matter will reveal its findings soon.
"We cannot come up with presumptions and that is why we need the committee to investigate before concluding what really happened,” he told a news conference.
On Sunday, a father and daughter were killed in an accident at the Educational Innovation of Motorsports and Automotive (EIMARace) 2016 go-kart race at Indera Mahkota, Kuantan that was co-organised by the Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).
A video of the incident appeared to show that spectators were only separated from the track and racing go-karts by plastic dividers that flew away the instant these were hit by the go-kart that careened off the road and into the crowd.
Organisers had also asserted that the spectators were in a "prohibited” area.
Automobile Association of Malaysia (AAM) has said it did not give the safety nod to the organisers, explaining that the latter refused to pay the cost involved.
The Motorsports Association of Malaysia (MAM) subsequently said it approved the event and added that it, too, was investigating the incident.
