KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 27 — The family of murdered Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu has engaged a private company to serve court documents to one of her two convicted killers who is currently in Australia, their lawyer said today.

Lawyer Ramkarpal Singh said the civil lawsuit by Altantuya’s family against her two convicted killers will come up again on October 26 for case management, as their application to amend their statement of claim has yet to be served on ex-police commando Sirul Azhar Umar.

"We have engaged a private process server firm in Sydney for this as the Foreign Ministry here failed to do so. We hope the said documents will be delivered by the next case management date,” he said.

Last month, Ramkarpal said Altantuya’s family had waited for close to a year since they acted on the court’s instructions to hand over the necessary court documents to the Foreign Affairs Ministry, which was supposed to serve the documents on Sirul Azhar through the ministry’s consulate and processes in Sydney.

He had then said that the family may have to resort to a personal service of court documents directly to Sirul Azhar, as the official method of going through the Foreign Affairs Ministry was not bearing results.

The lawsuit over Altantuya’s high-profile 2006 murder, which was filed in 2007, has been stuck for months as the court documents had not been served on Sirul Azhar.

The civil suit by Altantuya’s family was previously paused pending the criminal proceedings against those accused of her murder and the related appeals.

Her family’s legal team have proceeded with the civil suit after the Federal Court’s unanimous decision last January 13, where the apex court reversed the acquittal of former police commandos Sirul Azhar and Azilah Hadri and sentenced them to death over Altantuya’s murder.
