KLANG, Sept 19 — Residents of Kampung Tok Muda, Kapar here described the floods due to a massive high tide yesterday morning in the area as the worst to date.
Adanan Suratman, 52, said he did not expect a flood of such a magnitude to hit the village as the incident had never happened before.
He said he had been living in the village for 25 years and it was the first time seawater rose above the 5.2 metre high bund which was built along the seaside as a water barrier.
"Early this morning, while we were still sleeping...we heard the sound of splashing water but by the time we got out of the house water was flowing very fast and in five minutes, it was flooded everywhere,” he told reporters when met here today.
For Ahmad Azhari Sooran, 45, this was the first time flood water rose to knee level high and damaged the belongings of residents in the village.
He said villagers were initially warned two days ago of a giant high tide tomorrow but it came earlier so villagers would still take the necessary precautions for tomorrow.
"When the high tide came in yesterday, we were not prepared and could not salvage various things in our house...our children’s school books were destroyed.
"Seawater has risen before but not above the bund and in fact the bund had just been built recently...for tomorrow we have packed all our belongings as a precaution,” he said.
Kapar headman, Yusri Abdullah when met said the village hall would be opened tonight as a precautionary measure should the people needed to be evacuated.
He said the hall, located on a higher ground, could accommodate up to 100 people should the giant high tide recur tomorrow morning.
