KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 8 — The family of Joice Chin Khoon Sing who was killed by a crane hook falling on her car has reached a settlement with the construction company involved in the accident.

The family told a news conference at a hotel in Petaling Jaya, Selangor earlier today that they will also not pursue any legal action against the Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG) Sdn Bhd even if the authorities later find it culpable for the accident.

"We now wish to put the tragedy behind us because prolonging it will only cause more pain,” Joice’s older brother, Khoon Ying, 26, was reported saying by The Star Online.

According to another report by The New Straits Times Online, the family reached an agreement with representatives from BUCG last night.

Lawyer for the family Jason Ng Kau, who was also at the same news conference, was reported to have confirmed the agreement included monetary assistance but declined to disclose the sum to protect their safety.

Joice died a week shy of her 24th birthday when a crane hook said to weigh one tonne fell 20 storeys onto her Perodua Kelisa car while she was stuck in the evening rush hour along Jalan Raja Chulan in Kuala Lumpur on August 25.

Authorities said the crane operator has since fled the country for Indonesia.

The Department of Occupational Safety and Health is still investigating the incident.
